Rooting and Re-Imaging

Note that YOU WILL BE ERASING EVERYTHING on the internal memory of your Nook. Yes, all your and Barnes & Noble's data will be gone. Again, turn back now if you aren't comfortable with that.

  REQUIRED FOR ALL: WinImage
  REQUIRED FOR ALL: ClockworkMod 3.2.0.1**
RootKit for B&N Software Versions greater than 1.1: File 1 and File 2

---
**NOTE**
No matter WHAT the current version is, you must use the above ClockworkMod version (3.2.0.1).

If you has previous download or used any other version of ClockworkMod, you MUST use the above version.  Otherwise the "data" partition will not re-format and instead will say "Error formatting data!"

_______________________________
  1. Install the WinImage Trial. There is no need to register.  The trial version is fine.

  2. Extract the ClockworkMod zip file ONLY. (Do not unzip any of the other downloaded files.)  It should contain one .img file.
  3. Open WinImage. (Windows 7 (and greater) users should use the "WinImage (administrator)" Shortcut)
  4. Go to WinImage menu “Disk” and select Use Disk X: where X: is your micro SD drive. Replace X: with whatever drive letter Windows assigned for your SD card.
  5. Go to the WinImage "Disk" menu and select Restore Virtual Hard Disk Image on physical drive…It will prompt you to select a physical drive from the list. Select your microSD one.

  6. Click OK, it will open a dialog prompting you to select the actual image. Change selection to "All Files (*.*)". Select the .img file you just extracted and follow the instructions to write the image on the micro SD card. Click "Yes" at the message.

  7. Using Windows Explorer, copy the rest of the ZIP files you previously downloaded to the microSD Card. Four files in all.

  8. Power off your Nook, insert the SD, and power on. You're now in ClockworkMod Recovery. Use the Volume up/down to move up/down through the menu. Press the Power button once to go back.
  9. Select "Install zip from SD card"
  10. Then "choose zip from SD card"
  11. Select the file manualnooter-4-5-18.zip.

  19. Power off your Nook, insert the SD, and power on to return to ClockworkMod Recovery.
  20. Under "mounts/storage," choose format system, then format data, then format boot IN THIS ORDER!

  21. After formatting, select "Install zip from SD card," then "choose zip from SD card," and select the appropriate file:

      Gingerbread: cm-7.2.0-encore.zip
      Honeycomb: HC-v4-emmc.zip
      Jellybean:  cm-10-20121205-encore.zip
  22. Wait for the process to complete - it MAY take a while, or it MAY be really quick.
  23. Once completed, choose another zip and install the Google Apps file:
      Gingerbread: gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip
      Honeycomb: HoneyGApps.v2.zip
      Jellybean:  gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip

  24. Power off your Nook.
  25. Remove your microSD Card.
  26. Turn on your Nook.
The selected OS is now installed and functioning!

I advise you to put the MicroSD card back into the Nook and reformat it under Settings prior to installing any new additional apps.

All: Holy Crap! I FINALLY got ADB to Connect!!!!!!

I didn't think it would ever be possible, but because I lost my root, I was completely STUCK in getting things to work right on my Nook Honeycomb and I HAD to find at least ONE computer that ADB would work on!

I couldn't BELIEVE what the reason was that I could NEVER, EVER get it working before... When TWC refused to believe me in March that their system was having a problem (and it WASN'T just me) and I was out of Internet service for 3 days, I installed PDANet tethering on my phone and my computers. (This was before the built in tethering was available on my phone - or before I knew it was there - whichever).

The PDANet software was the culprit and I had totally forgotten it was even there because it never showed up in my Add/Remove Programs! Turns out it installed DIFFERENT Android device drivers so every time I plugged in my Nook, Windows was Automatically using THOSE drivers.

How Did I Fix It?

Well, I certainly didn't Add/Remove because there was no uninstall option. I didn't even know it WAS the problem until I did this:
  1. Made sure the Nook was plugged into the computer.
  2. Went into the Device Manager and removed EVERYTHING that said "B&N" or "Nook" or "Android"
  3. Removed the Android SDK packages.
  4. Did a Search on My Computer for anything with "Android" or "Nook" in the filename and deleted it.
  5. Start > Run > regedit
  6. Clicked on: My Computer
  7. Edit > Find...
  8. First I did a search on "Nook" and removed every single entry that appeared.
  9. Once that finally finished, I did a search on "Android" and removed every single entry that appeared.
  10. Closed out of the Registry editor.
  11. Removed the Nook USB cable from the computer.
  12. Re-installed nookcolor-easyADB.exe
  13. Rebooted the computer.
  14. Plugged in the Nook after everything settled down.

THERE IT WAS!

Honeycomb: I LOST MY ROOT!

FYI: These instructions ONLY work if you have a PC connection with ADB.
The stupid ADB wireless widget (I have because I have NEVER gotten ADB to work) only works IF YOU HAVE ROOT! So, how the heck.....?! Anywho, the below should work just dandy - IF you have an ADB PC connection...
- - -
Download: (Don't Install Yet)

Assuming ADB is still installed on Windows, copy each of the above into C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools
Open the DOS prompt, and type "CD C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools" [enter]
If using ADB Wireless Widget, type "adb connect [IP Address:Port]"
(Key: You Type. It responds.)

C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools>adb push su /data/local
1641 KB/s (26267 bytes in 0.015s)

C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools>adb push Superuser.apk /data/local
2047 KB/s (196521 bytes in 0.093s)

C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools>adb push BusyBox.apk /data/local
2244 KB/s (4416319 bytes in 1.921s)

C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools>adb remount
remount succeeded

C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools>adb shell
root@android:/ # cd /data/local
cd /data/local
root@android:/data/local # cat Superuser.apk > /system/app/Superuser.apk
cat Superuser.apk > /system/app/Superuser.apk
root@android:/data/local # cat su > /system/bin/su
cat su > /system/bin/su
root@android:/data/local # cat BusyBox.apk > /system/xbin/BusyBox.apk
cat BusyBox.apk > /system/xbin/BusyBox.apk
root@android:/data/local # ln -s /system/bin/su /system/xbin/su
ln -s /system/bin/su /system/xbin/su (** If not, see tips below)
root@android:/data/local # chmod 06755 /system/bin/su
chmod 06755 /system/bin/su

Typing su should now work

root@android:/data/local # su
su
(** If not, see tips below)

At this point, you can/should install BusyBox
like any other app.
Troubleshooting Tips:

  • If you get an error similar to: "link_image[1938]: 2060 missing essential tablesCANNOT LINK EXECUTABLE", then it's because you didn't download the "fixed" su file (like me), and you have an su file that is not compatible with Honeycomb.
  • When creating the link to su, if you receive a "File Exists" error message, then type: rm /system/xbin/su, reissue the ln command, and continue with the rest of the instructions.

Honeycomb: How I Got My Calendar to Work Again

After deciding to try Phiremod (cwm zip), not liking it and switching back to Honeycomb, my calendar disappeared and I couldn't get it working again. I have NEVER been able to get ADB to work correctly on any of my computers, nor had any of my computers find an ADB Device in the Device manager despite my numerous attempts of the USB driver installs and NUMEROUS web posting on people having problems with ADB connections.

So after reformatting and reinstalling and re-nootering five different times without success, I FINALLY found my personally working answer with a combination of several peoples/posts help.
  1. I uninstalled the SDK, Java, etc.
  2. I downloaded/installed nookcolor-easyADB on my XP computer.
  3. I installed one of the ADB wireless widgets from the Market.
  4. I copied the files within THIS ZIP file to the directory C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools
  5. I opened the wireless widget, and quickly wrote down the IP and port it gave me.
  6. I open the DOS prompt, and typed "CD C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools" [enter]
  7. Then typed "adb connect the [IP Address:Port]"
    IT CONNECTED!!!!!!!!!!!! WOO HOO!!!
  8. Then I typed "HoneyGCalInstall"
  9. It did its thing and I FINALLY got my calendar back and syncing correctly!

What a LONG week! If only I was like NORMAL people, this would have been MUCH, MUCH easier!

My Apps

This is for backup purposes. Let it be known that each and everyone of these apps are FREE apps. They are not pirated. They are all available through the Android Market/Play Store or Amazon's Marketplace App Store. I have not yet found a reason to have to pay for a single application, therefore its just not possible for any of the below to be against any kind of software licensing prohibitions.

Rooting Your B&N Nook Software Version 1.1.0

Based on a Windows Desktop/Laptop PC.

Before starting:
  • Make sure your Nook is fully charged.
  • Make sure you have already gone through the initial Barnes and Noble Nook registration on the Nook. If you do not have a Barnes and Noble account already, use your Gmail account.
  • You need to have a MicroSD card that is AT LEAST 4gb in size, preferred Class 4 with an SD Card converter card and a SD Card Reader for your Windows PC.

1. Download and Install WinImage. No need for registration, the trial version will work well for 30 days and you'll only use it twice. (Official Link | My Link)

2. Download AutoNooter. (As of this writing, the latest version is
  auto-nooter-2-12-25.img.zip
) (Official Link | My Link)

Auto-Nooter is a script designed to automate a number of steps for the Nook Color rooting process that makes everything faster and easier. The script will also install several utilities like Softkeys 2.0.2 and Android market. Below is the detailed list:
  • Installs su and Superuser.apk
  • Installs Busybox
  • Installs Softkeys 2.0.2
  • Installs NookColor Tools (To Enable Non-Market Installs)
  • Installs Calendar and Calculator.
  • Installs Android Market, Gmail, Youtube
  • Enable Multi-touch for Android Apps
  • Enables Live Wallpapers
  • Enables Android Market and Gmail.
  • App Auto Install (Open up NooterFiles from sdcard drop in /data/app)
3. Extract the content somewhere on your hard drive. It should one .img file.

4. Insert your microSD card within the SD Converter into the PC.

5. Open WinImage.

6. Go to WinImage menu “Disk” and select Use Disk X: where X: is your micro SD drive. Replace X: with whatever drive letter Windows assigned for your SD card.

7. Go to the WinImage "Disk" menu and select Restore Virtual Hard Disk Image on physical drive…It will prompt you to select a physical drive from the list. Select your microSD one.

8. Click OK, it will open a dialog prompting you to select the actual image. Change selection to "All Files (*.*)". Select the .img file you just extracted and follow the instructions to write the image on the micro SD card. Click "Yes" at the message.

9. You now have a micro SD card that will enable Nook Color to boot up in a special mode that will open it to side loading content.

10. Power Off the device, insert the micro SD card in it and plug the Nook Color via USB to your PC. The Nook Color should reboot automatically. If the image was successfully written on the microSD card, Nook Color should boot to a  blank black screen.

11. After a few moments, your Nook will boot normally.

12. Remove the MicroSD card from the Nook and place it back into the computer.
